Hear from the Economic Opportunity Institute’s executive director, Rian Watt, following the 2025 legislative session. Session ended Sunday, April 27.
“This legislative session, our team worked hard to expand worker protections and continue the fight for economic justice here in Washington. We won improvements to Paid Family & Medical Leave program to include shift workers and expand job protection, we ensured that Paid Sick and Safe Days cover time off for immigration proceedings, and we ensured that medical debt will no longer be included on credit reports and scores. These wins come at a time when we’re facing an affordability crisis and attacks from the federal government.
“As proud as we are of those wins, we are deeply disappointed with the continued burden placed on working people in the final budget. Washington state has the second most regressive tax code in the country, and this budget won’t move us forward. This session, we proposed policies that would have made our tax code more progressive and made the ultra-wealthy pay what they truly owe. But corporate backroom deals and big-money interests resulted in a tax code that continues to prioritize profits over people.
“We will continue to fight alongside you for policies that make this Washington a national model of economic opportunity.”
